The Darkest Dawn: the Iolaire disaster

By John MacLean, 03/11/18:

A new book on the sinking of the Iolaire has been launched at Faclan Book Festival in Stornoway.

The Darkest Dawn tells the story of all those on board the Iolaire and the shattering effect on the community after the sinking occurred on the morning of 1st January 1919, at the Beasts of Holm by the entrance to Stornoway harbour.

Author Malcolm Macdonald (pictured here on the right, with Roddy Murray, head of visual arts and literature at An Lanntair) worked on completion of the book for four years after the untimely death of co-author, local historian Donald John Macleod.
